A researched UK buying guide

Keep a little power in reserve.

Choose a power bank for your actual phone, cable and charging needs. A larger number on the box is only part of the decision.

Capacity, connections, then convenience.

A 10,000mAh power bank is a manageable starting point for portable phone backup. A 20,000mAh model provides more stored capacity, at the cost of more bulk. Neither capacity guarantees three days of phone use: devices, usage and charging losses vary.

Anker Nano A1259

This model has an integrated USB-C cable and supports charging output up to 30W. A useful shortlist choice for compatible USB-C phones when portability matters.

Check before buying

A built-in USB-C cable will not plug directly into a Lightning iPhone. Bring the right separate cable for older iPhones, including iPhone 13. Actual charging speed depends on the device.

Belkin BoostCharge BPB012

A larger-capacity option with one USB-C port and two USB-A ports. Belkin specifies up to 15W shared output across the connected devices.

Check before buying

15W is the shared total, not 15W per port simultaneously. Check the exact BPB012 model and your device’s cable. This is a phone/tablet power bank, not a mains appliance supply.

Three checks that matter.

Match the cable

USB-C and Lightning are different connectors. Test the exact cable and phone combination before storing it with your kit.

Keep it charged

Follow the storage and charging instructions. A power bank cannot help if it is empty when the power goes out.

Know the limits

These models do not run kettles or heating. For essential medical equipment, use the equipment provider’s guidance and arrange an appropriate backup plan.

Questions before you buy.

How many times will it charge my phone?

We do not promise a number. Phone battery size, charging losses, temperature and how much you use the phone while charging all affect the result. Rated mAh is not the same as usable capacity delivered to your phone.

Can a wind-up radio replace a power bank?

Do not assume so. USB output varies by radio, and hand winding is not a practical substitute for a pre-charged phone power bank.

Should I buy a solar power bank?

For a basic household kit, start with a conventional power bank you can charge and test. Do not rely on a small integrated solar panel to refill it quickly in UK conditions.
